APUSH - Ch2/3 discussion questions (posted below) are due on Monday and the document readings from The American Spirit and corresponding SOAPSTone analysis are due Tuesday. Please remember you have a colony report due on Monday Aug. 25. BTW - There was a 6 pt curve on the test Friday.

Ch.2

 

  1. What did England and the English settlers really want from colonization? Did they get what they wanted?
  2. How did Spanish success in the New World influence English colonial efforts? How did different events in England and Europe affect England’s colonies in the New World?
  3. Were the English colonizers crueler or more tolerant than the Spanish conquistadores? How did these interactions affect both white and native societies?
  4. Was the development of African slavery in the North American colonies inevitable? Discuss the role of the encomienda system and the sugar colonies in introducing slavery to the southern colonies.
  5. How did the reliance on plantation agriculture affect the southern colonies?

 

Ch. 3

  1. How did the Puritans reconcile their own religious dissent from the Church of England with their persecution of dissenters like Hutchinson and Williams?
  2. How were government and religion (church and state) related in New England and the middle colonies? How does this compare with more recent understandings?

-       The report should be written in question and answer format.

-       2-4 typed pages in length. (font size 12 pt)

7.     What do you think can be learned in terms of world history and culture from reading this book?

 

Evaluation

8.     What part of the book, or quotation from the book, will be indelibly etched in your mind and heart?

9.     What historical or human connections did the book help to make for you with other places and peoples, and other times?

10.  What makes this story a “classic”? What makes this story part of all of our histories and of your life today?

 

Each of the above questions should be discussed in at least a paragraph. Try not to be vague. Use specific parts of the book to explain your points and give a complete, specific and detailed picture of the historical context. Give definite dates, places, dynasties or epochs, events in the dynasty that relate to the material in the book.
